Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means “to yoke” or “to unite.” As a practice, it is a scientific system for achieving total health, mental, and spiritual well-being — a means to unite the body, mind, and spirit. Often in the western world the term yoga is used to mean the postures (asanas), or the physical aspect of yoga; however, these asanas, are only one of the eight “limbs” of yoga. The most commonly practiced form of yoga in the world, Hatha Yoga systematically stretches and strengthens muscles throughout the body, increases circulation to internal organs and glands, quiets the nervous system, and improves concentration regardless of age or ability. This ancient system of self-care brings vitality, health, deep relaxation, and peace of mind.
Everyone comes to class with different ailments and differing levels of experience but the beauty of yoga is that as long as you listen to your body, try your best and just do what you can, you will receive huge benefits. We are all learning and we all feel different each day.
Ideally, yoga is meant to be a daily practice. This may or may not be feasible to you therefore we recommend you set a goal you can realistically keep. Consistency is the key—it’s far better to attend one class per week without fail than to attend four classes one week, none for the next two weeks, one the next week, etc. The more you practice, the better you will feel, and the more you will want to practice!
Yoga helps to strengthen and lengthen your muscles. You will also burn calories and sweat depending on how hard you work during class. However, once you begin to detox and feel cleansed you will feel healthier and undoubtedly happier which will lead to a healthier life off the mat.
It is best to come to class on an empty stomach, however since every body is so different, do have something light (fruit etc..) an hour before class. It is also very important to hydrate well 24 hours before class. One of the aims of class is to detox therefore arriving hydrated will help to flush toxins from the body. We aim to create internal heat during class, therefore it is best to refrain from drinking too much, however if you need to, take small sips.
It is very important to let me know if you are pregnant or if you have any injuries or physical conditions I should know about. Please wear comfortable clothing and please bring a yoga mat if you have one and some water.
The language is Sanskrit and is used throughout India. At the end of class you will hear "Namaste" which is a word of greeting.
The Sanskrit word Chakra literally translates to wheel or disk. In yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, this term refers to wheels of energy throughout the body. There are seven main chakras, which align the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head and are the centers in our bodies in which energy flows through. Each of the seven main chakras contains bundles of nerves and major organs as well as our psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being. Since everything is moving, it’s essential that our seven main chakras stay open and aligned. If there is a blockage, energy cannot flow and our health can be compromised.
